Prepositions of Time - ESL EFL Teaching Resources

In, On, At - Dominoes

ESL EFL Matching Activity - Elementary - 20 Minutes

Help your students to understand how to use prepositions of time with this dominoes game. The dominoes contain the prepositions of time 'in', 'on' and 'at' on one side and a time expression on the other. One student places a domino in front of them and the other student tries to match the preposition with a time expression by placing one of his or her dominoes at either end of the first domino. The students continue taking it in turns to place dominoes until one student has no dominoes left. This student is the winner.

Prepositions Tic Tac Toe

ESL EFL Speaking Activity - Elementary - 25 Minutes

This fun activity gives students an opportunity to practice or review prepositions of time and place. In small teams, students play a game of Tic-Tac-Toe where the objective is to make grammatically correct sentences in order to form a vertical, horizontal or diagonal row of Xs or Os. The teams take it in turns to choose a preposition square that they think will match with the time or place expression on a card. If they make a suitable sentence using the preposition and time or place expression, they win the square. Teams score one point every time they achieve three in a row. The team with the highest score at the end wins.

Time Prepositions Board Game

EFL EFL Speaking Activity - Elementary - 25 Minutes

This engaging board game can be used to teach or review the prepositions of time: in, on, at. The object of the game is to match a time expression and preposition correctly in order to ask a question. When a player lands on a time expression square, they look at the cards in their hand and find a preposition card that matches the time in the square, e.g. at Christmas, on Monday, etc. If a player has a suitable preposition card, they ask a question to another player using the preposition and time expression, e.g. Did you go out on Saturday, Tom? After the student has replied, the player discards their preposition card and picks up a new one. Then, it's the next player's turn. The first player to get to the finish is the winner.

Time Prepositions Quiz

EFL EFL Reading, Writing and Speaking Activity - Elementary - 30 Minutes

Here is a great activity for revising prepositions of time (in, on, at). In the activity, students complete sentences in a general knowledge quiz by choosing the correct time preposition and answer. The answers are all time expressions, e.g. days, times, dates, months, etc. The class is divided into pairs and each pair is given a copy of the worksheet. Students read each sentence and choose from three possible answers. When they have decided on the correct answer, they complete the sentence by choosing the right time preposition (in, on, at). When the students have finished, the answers are checked as a class. Students score two points for the correct time preposition and answer, or one point for the correct time preposition but wrong answer or vice versa. The pair with the highest score is the winner.
