Mixed Conditionals - ESL EFL Activities, Games and Worksheets

Conditional Cards

ESL EFL Writing or Speaking Activity - Pre-intermediate - 25 Minutes

In this enjoyable card game, students race to complete mixed conditional sentences. Each group is given a set of conditional cards. The students shuffle the cards and place them face down in a pile on the table. The first student turns over the top card and reads the beginning of a conditional sentence aloud. The other students in the group then race to complete the ending of the conditional sentence. This could be done in written form or orally. The first student to produce a grammatically correct and appropriate conditional sentence keeps the card. Then the second student picks up a card and so on. The winner is the student with the most cards at the end of the game.

Conditional Chain Game

ESL EFL Speaking Activity - Pre-intermediate - 20 Minutes

In this entertaining ESL activity, students make first and second conditional sentences in a chain format. The teacher starts the game by saying an 'if clause' using the first or second conditional. The first student makes a conditional sentence by repeating the 'if clause' and adding a conclusion. The next student makes a new sentence by changing the first student’s conclusion into an 'if clause' and adding a new conclusion and so on. Additional game elements can be added by limiting the time each student has to give a correct conclusion. If a student cannot come up with an answer within the time limit, or if they make an error, they are out of the game.

Conditional Dominoes

ESL EFL Matching and Speaking Activity - Pre-intermediate - 25 Minutes

In this engaging teaching activity, students play a game of dominoes by matching halves of zero, first, second and third conditional sentences. The class is divided into groups of three and each group is given a set of dominoes. The dominoes contain different halves of zero, first, second and third conditional sentences. The students shuffle the dominoes and deal out five cards each. The remaining domino is placed face up on the table. The first player adds a domino to make a correct conditional sentence. The player can add their domino either before or after the domino on the table. Play then passes to the next student and so on. If a player cannot put down one of their dominoes, play passes to the next student. The winner of the game is the first player to get rid of all their dominoes. The other players continue to put down their dominoes, as when all the dominoes have been matched they form a loop. If a loop is not formed, then the students haven’t matched the dominoes correctly and they should look for their mistake. When the students have finished, they discuss the sentences and say whether they are true for them or not and if they agree or disagree with what each sentence says.

Conditional Thoughts

ESL EFL Speaking Activity - Pre-intermediate - 20 Minutes

This imaginative speaking activity teaches students about first and second conditional structures. Each student is given a worksheet. Working individually, students answer questions about real and unreal conditional situations by writing words or phrases in squares on their worksheet. When everyone has finished, the students swap worksheets with a partner. Students then have to try to guess why their partner has written the words or phrases in the squares by asking conditional questions.

Conditionals Review

ESL EFL Reading and Writing - Intermediate - 25 Minutes

In this productive teaching activity, students review the zero, first, second, and third conditional by writing chain sentences. The class is split into groups of four and each group is given a set of conditional cards. Each student takes a card (zero, first, second or third conditional). The students complete the first sentence on their card by writing their own ending to the conditional sentence. When they have finished writing, the students pass their card to the student on their right. That student writes a new conditional sentence using the ending of the first sentence as the beginning of the second sentence. This continues until each student has written a sentence on the card, making four conditional sentences in a chain. Finally, the students read out their conditional sentences to the class.

Countdown

ESL EFL Speaking Activity - Intermediate - 35 Minutes

In this fun board game, students practice making and completing mixed conditional sentences. This game can be used to review the zero, first, second and third conditional tense. In small groups, students take it in turns to throw a dice and move a counter along a board. When a student lands on a square, they must complete a conditional sentence or they may be asked to make their own conditional sentence. After they have made the sentence, the student must talk about the topic for 30 seconds. If the student makes a suitable and grammatically correct sentence and can talk about it for 30 seconds, they stay on the square. If not, they must go back to their previous square. The winner of the game is the first student to reach the finish.
