ESL Complimenting Game - Vocabulary: Matching, Pelmanism - Pair Work - Pre-intermediate (A2) - 40 minutes

Here is a free giving and accepting compliments game for students to play in class. In groups, students take it in turns to turn over one situation card and one response card. If the situation matches the response, the student reads it aloud, keeps the two cards and has another turn. If the cards don't match, the student turns them back over, keeping them in the same place. The game continues until all the cards have been matched. The student with the most pairs of cards at the end of the game wins.

Students then categorise expressions for giving and receiving compliments. Next, students choose one of the expressions to use in each situation shown. After that, students complete other compliments and replies using the expressions. Students then complete compliments and replies with the words provided and match them together. Lastly, students write down three compliments for their partner and then take turns complimenting each other and giving suitable replies.

Compliments Board Game

ESL Compliments Board Game - Speaking : Forming Sentences from Prompts, Writing Sentences, Freer Practice - Group Work - Intermediate (B1) - 30 minutes

In this engaging compliments board game, students practice giving compliments in a variety of situations. In groups, players take turns rolling the dice and moving their counter along the board. When a player lands on a square, they read the situation aloud and then give an appropriate compliment. For example, for the square 'Your friend is wearing a new dress', the player might say 'What a beautiful dress! Where did you get it?' The other students listen to the compliment and judge the player's response. If the compliment is grammatically correct and appropriate, the player stays on the square and writes down the compliment. If not, the player goes back to their previous square. The next player then rolls the dice, and so on. The first player to reach the finish wins the game. Afterwards, read each situation from the gameboard and review the groups' compliments as a class, providing feedback as required.
