ESL Complimenting Game - Vocabulary: Matching, Pelmanism - Pair Work - Pre-intermediate (A2) - 40 minutes

Here is a free giving and accepting compliments game for students to play in class. In groups, students take it in turns to turn over one situation card and one response card. If the situation matches the response, the student reads it aloud, keeps the two cards and has another turn. If the cards don't match, the student turns them back over, keeping them in the same place. The game continues until all the cards have been matched. The student with the most pairs of cards at the end of the game wins.

In this useful complimenting worksheet, students practice language for giving and responding to compliments. To begin, in pairs, students discuss questions on the topic of compliments. Students then categorise expressions for giving and receiving compliments. Next, students choose one of the expressions to use in each situation shown. After that, students complete other compliments and replies using the expressions. Students then complete compliments and replies with the words provided and match them together. Lastly, students write down three compliments for their partner and then take turns complimenting each other and giving suitable replies.
