Valentine's Day ESL Activities and Worksheets

Messy Valentine's Day Mystery

ESL Valentine's Day Activity - Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking - Pre-intermediate (A2) - 25 minutes

In this Valentines activity, students talk to one another to solve a mystery about who received a Valentine's Day card from who. Divide the students into groups of eight. Give each student in the group a card and a worksheet. Tell the students that they are going to take on the role of the person on their card and that they have each sent and received a Valentine's Day card. The students' task is to find out information about the Valentine's Day card each person in their group sent and received by asking questions and completing a chart with the information. Draw the students' attention to the chart on the worksheet and elicit the questions the students need to ask to find out the information. Have the students write their own information in the chart to begin. Next, students go around their group asking and answering the questions and noting down the information in their chart. When the students have finished, divide them into pairs and have them look at the information to work out who received a Valentine's Day card from who. The students then complete sentences with the corresponding names. Finally, review the correct answers with the class.

Valentine's Day Crossword

ESL Valentine's Day Activity - Reading, Spelling, Listening and Speaking - Pre-intermediate (A2) - 25 minutes

In this Valentine's Day activity, students complete a crossword by listening to clues and guessing Valentine's Day vocabulary. Divide the students into pairs (A and B) and give each student a corresponding worksheet. Explain that both students have the same crossword, but Student A has the words across and Student B has the words down. The students' task is to ask their partner for clues and complete the missing Valentine's Day words on their crossword. Students then take it in turns to ask their partner for a clue to one of the missing words on their crossword, e.g. 'What's 1 down?' Their partner reads out the clue for that Valentine's Day word and the other student tries to guess what it is. If the student guesses the word successfully, they write it on their crossword. If not, their partner continues to give more clues until the student is able to guess the word. When the students have finished, they check their spelling by comparing crosswords.
