In this insightful Valentine's Day activity, students conduct a survey where they ask and answer yes/no questions about Valentine's Day. In groups, each student begins by forming the yes/no Valentine's Day question they need to ask from the prompt on their card, e.g. 'Do you like giving flowers as a gift on Valentine's Day?' Students then go around their group, asking and answering the Valentine's Day questions. Students note the number of people who answer yes or no to their question on the card. When everyone has finished, each student reports their findings to the class.

Here is an enjoyable Valentine's Day quiz game to help students practice Valentine's Day vocabulary and prepositions. Next, students pair up with someone from the other group and take turns asking their partner a Valentine's Day trivia question followed by three possible multiple-choice answers. Their partner then guesses which one is correct. For each correct guess, students put a tick. The student with the most correct guesses at the end of the game wins.

In this fun Valentine's Day speaking activity, students talk to one another to solve a mystery about who received a Valentine's Day card from who. In groups, students take on the role of the person who has sent and received a Valentine's Day card. The students' task is to find out information about the Valentine's Day card each person in their group sent and received by asking questions and completing a chart with the information. Students go around their group asking and answering the questions and noting down the information in their chart. Next, in pairs, students look at the information to work out who received a Valentine's Day card from who and complete sentences with the corresponding names. Finally, review the correct answers with the class.

Valentine's Day Crossword

In this useful Valentine's Day vocabulary activity, students complete a crossword by listening to clues and guessing Valentine's Day vocabulary. In pairs, students take it in turns to ask their partner for a clue to one of the missing words on their crossword. Their partner reads out the clue for that Valentine's Day word and the other student tries to guess what it is. If the student guesses the word successfully, they write it on their crossword. If not, their partner continues to give more clues until the student is able to guess the word. When the students have finished, they check their spelling by comparing crosswords.

Valentine's Day Race

In this free Valentine's Day speaking activity, students match Valentine's Day words to definitions and then race to complete sentences with the vocabulary. In two groups, students start by matching 10 Valentine's Day words to their correct definitions. Next, students join up with a partner from the other group. Students then race to complete sentences on their worksheet with the Valentine's Day vocabulary from their partner's sheet. Students take it in turns to read each sentence to their partner using the word 'blank' for the missing word. Their partner chooses a Valentine's Day word from their worksheet to complete the sentence and says it aloud. If the pair agrees the word is correct, the student writes it in the sentence. When both students have completed all their sentences, they shout 'Finished!' and their answers are checked. The first pair to complete both sets of sentences correctly wins.

In this productive Valentine's Day board game, students practice vocabulary related to Valentine's Day and talk in response to topic-related prompts. Players take turns rolling the dice and moving their counter along the board. If a player lands on a 'Talk about' square, they talk in response to the Valentine's Day prompt for 30 seconds without stopping. If a player can't think of anything to say or stops talking before the 30 seconds are up, they go back two squares. If a player lands on a blank square, another student picks up a card and reads out the question on the card, followed by three possible multiple-choice answers. The player has ten seconds to answer. If the player answers correctly, they remain on the square. If not, they move their counter back two squares. The first player to reach the finish wins the game.

In this engaging Valentine's Day game, students race to choose the best verb to complete would sentences and idioms related to Valentine's Day. In groups, students take it in turns to pick up a card. The student then reads out the would sentence or idiom on the card using the word 'blank' for the missing verb and then gives three choices for the possible answer. The other group members listen and race to say the verb that best completes the sentence. The first student to say the correct answer wins and keeps the card. The group then discusses the sentence or idiom on the card with each student saying whether they would do the thing written on the card or not, giving more information or explanation as needed. For example, for the card "I would make a reservation at a fancy restaurant," a student might agree and say what restaurant they would choose and why. Students are allowed one guess per turn. If no one says the correct answer, the card is placed at the bottom of the pile to be used again later in the game. The student with the most cards at the end of the game wins.
