Valentine's Day Race

ESL Valentine's Day Activity - Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking - Elementary (A1-A2) - 30 minutes

In this free Valentine's Day activity, students match Valentine's Day words to definitions and then race to complete sentences with the vocabulary. In two groups, students start by matching 10 Valentine's Day words to their correct definitions. Next, students join up with a partner from the other group. Students then race to complete sentences on their worksheet with the Valentine's Day vocabulary from their partner's sheet. Students take it in turns to read each sentence to their partner using the word 'blank' for the missing word. Their partner chooses a Valentine's Day word from their worksheet to complete the sentence and says it aloud. If the pair agrees the word is correct, the student writes it in the sentence. When both students have completed all their sentences, they shout 'Finished!' and their answers are checked. The first pair to complete both sets of sentences correctly wins.

Would you do that on Valentine's Day?

ESL Valentine's Day Game - Speaking Activity - Intermediate (B1) - 30 minutes

In this Valentine's Day game, students race to choose the best verb to complete would sentences and idioms related to Valentine's Day. In groups, students take it in turns to pick up a card. The student then reads out the would sentence or idiom on the card using the word 'blank' for the missing verb and then gives three choices for the possible answer. The other group members listen and race to say the verb that best completes the sentence. The first student to say the correct answer wins and keeps the card. The group then discusses the sentence or idiom on the card with each student saying whether they would do the thing written on the card or not, giving more information or explanation as needed. For example, for the card "I would make a reservation at a fancy restaurant," a student might agree and say what restaurant they would choose and why. Students are allowed one guess per turn. If no one says the correct answer, the card is placed at the bottom of the pile to be used again later in the game. The student with the most cards at the end of the game wins.
