Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns, telling us about qualities, size, age, shape, color, or origin, as in 'a small, old, round, brown table.' Without adjectives, language gives us only the bare facts of who and what; with them, writers and speakers shape how a reader or listener feels about those facts, turning 'a house' into 'a cramped, dark, crumbling house' or 'a bright, airy, welcoming home.'

When to Use Adjectives
Creating vivid images in storytelling: When a writer wants a reader to picture something clearly, precise adjectives do the work that a noun alone cannot, as in 'a narrow, winding, cobblestone street,' which places the reader on location far more effectively than 'a street in an old town.'
Signalling opinion in reviews and recommendations: In restaurant, film, or product reviews, adjective choice tells the reader how to feel before they have seen the evidence, so a writer who calls a meal 'overpriced and bland' shapes the reader's expectation immediately in a way that 'the food was not good value' does not.
Making descriptions precise rather than vague: Choosing a specific adjective over a general one gives the listener an exact picture, so a speaker who says 'the room was cramped and airless' communicates something far more precise than 'the room was bad.'
3-Step Framework for Teaching Adjectives
1. Build Recognition Through Controlled Practice: Start with a yes/no guessing game where students fill in a grid by deciding whether each common item matches a chosen adjective, then ask their partner yes or no questions to identify the choices made. The controlled format keeps early learners on task while giving every student several turns to produce and respond to adjective-based questions.
2. Deepen Range with a Categorization Race: Once students can produce adjectives accurately at a basic level, push them to work across the full adjective system. Teams race to categorize adjectives of opinion, size, age, shape, color, and origin before using each one in a sentence. The time pressure stops students from relying on one or two safe adjectives and forces them to pull from a wider range.
3. Push Fluency with a Competitive Sentence-Building Game: Consolidate production by having teams turn over one adjective card and one noun card, then race to construct the longest sentence possible using the combination. The race format rewards both accuracy and ambition, pushing students to extend basic descriptions into richer, more detailed sentences.
Common Mistakes with Adjectives
Placing the adjective after the noun: Students often transfer the word order from their first language to English, producing noun-first phrases that sound ungrammatical to a native speaker. Wrong: 'She bought a dress red.' Correct: 'She bought a red dress.'
Using an adjective instead of an adverb: Students often use the adjective form where English requires an adverb, because the distinction between the two forms does not exist in the same way in their first language. Wrong: 'He speaks English perfect.' Correct: 'He speaks English perfectly.'
