ESL Weather Vocabulary Game - Vocabulary: Bingo, Matching In this weather game, students play bingo by listening to weather adjectives and matching them to pictures on their bingo cards. Begin the game by reading out a weather adjective from the caller's sheet and putting a tick beside it to show it has been read. If a student has a matching picture on their bingo card, they put a cross beside it and say the word aloud. When a student has crossed off all nine pictures, they shout 'Bingo!' and read out the nine weather adjectives on their card. Check that they are the weather adjectives that you have ticked. If the weather adjectives are correct, the student wins the round. If the student has made a mistake, the game continues. Play several rounds, making sure students receive a different bingo card each time. If you have more than 12 students in the class, students play the game in groups of four or five. One student is the bingo caller, and the other students take a bingo card each. Students then play the game in their groups using the same procedure as above. Each time a student wins a round, a new student becomes the bingo caller. This continues until all the bingo cards have been used. How to Use Weather Vocabulary

Connect pictures with complete sentences: Introduce weather adjectives using clear images, then move from naming the condition to saying 'It's sunny' or 'It's cloudy'. Model the full response so students practice the subject and verb alongside the new word.

Make word forms visible: Group related forms such as 'rain', 'rainy' and 'raining', and show a sentence for each. Ask students to explain which form fits a gap and why, rather than treating the words as interchangeable translations.

Give questions a purpose: Use missing weather information, personal preferences or plans to create a reason to ask and listen. Distinguish current conditions, past weather and forecasts clearly before introducing several time references in the same activity.

3-Step Framework for Teaching Weather Vocabulary

For beginners, build a sequence around the page's linked flashcards, bingo and survey resources. Move from understanding the same set of weather adjectives to recognising them independently and using them to exchange personal information.

1. Establish meaning and sentence patterns: Show weather flashcards, elicit the adjectives and model pronunciation. Practice questions such as 'How's the weather?' and 'Is it windy?' before students match words to pictures and judge picture-based statements as true or false.

2. Check recognition through listening: Call out weather adjectives while students find and mark matching pictures on bingo cards. Students say the words as they mark them, and the winner reads back all nine adjectives. This checks recognition and pronunciation before longer exchanges.

3. Exchange and report information: Students ask group members prepared weather-related questions and tally the yes and no responses. They then use the totals to report findings, such as 'Four people stay at home when it's stormy.' The vocabulary now supports a message about their classmates.

Common Mistakes with Weather Vocabulary

Using a noun where an adjective is needed: Use 'windy' to describe conditions after 'it is'. Incorrect: 'It is wind today.' Correct: 'It is windy today.' With the noun, students can say 'There is a strong wind today.'

Omitting the subject in weather statements: English weather sentences usually need 'it' as the subject when describing conditions. Incorrect: 'Is raining outside.' Correct: 'It is raining outside.' Practice the complete pattern before shortening it to 'It's raining.'
