To begin, hold up each flashcard. Point to the picture and elicit each home-related word. Then model and drill pronunciation chorally and individually. Next, write the following frames on the board: 'What's this?' 'It's a/an...' 'Is this...?' 'Yes, it is. / No, it isn't.' Show the flashcards again and ask different students the questions on the board. Elicit suitable responses as you move around the class. On the worksheet, students then match the home-related words to pictures. Next, students write down each home-related word in the table under the correct category. Finally, students circle the odd word out. In pair, students take turns picking up a card and reading the first clue to their partner. Their partner then tries to guess the target word using the phrase, 'It is a/an...' If their partner guesses the correct word shown in bold on the card, the guessing student scores two points. If not, the student reads the second clue for one point. If the word is guessed correctly after the second clue, the guessing student scores one point. The two students then swap roles and repeat the process with the next card. This continues until all the cards have been used. The student with the most points at the end of the game wins. In pairs, both students turn over a card from their pile at the same time and place it face up on the table. If the picture and the word match, the first student to say 'Snap!' scores a point. If the picture and the word don't match, students continue turning over cards until a matching pair comes up. If a student says 'Snap!' when the picture and the word don't match, the other student scores a point. When a student scores a point, both students pick up their own cards, add them to their pile, shuffle them, and restart the game. Students do not pick up their partner's cards. If a student runs out of cards, they pick up their own cards, shuffle them, make a new pile and continue. The first student to reach ten points wins the game. Locate an item clearly: Add the room and a position when someone needs to find something. 'The lamp is on the table beside the sofa' is more helpful than simply saying it is in the living room.

Explain purpose when a word is unfamiliar: Describe what people do with an object. 'It is a cupboard where we keep clothes' gives a listener a clue to the word 'wardrobe' and helps the conversation continue.

Describe a problem precisely: Name the item and the part that needs attention. 'One leg of the chair is loose' gives more useful information than 'The chair is bad'.

3-Step Framework for Teaching Houses, Rooms and Furniture Vocabulary

This sequence suits elementary classes, moving from recognising home vocabulary to understanding clues and exchanging information.

1. Match Words with Pictures: Students turn over picture and word cards together, calling 'Snap!' when they match. This checks recognition of common home vocabulary before students identify the same kinds of words from spoken descriptions.

2. Identify Objects from Clues: Students read clues to a partner, who guesses using 'It is a/an...'. A correct answer after the first clue earns two points; a second clue offers another chance for one point. The clues connect words with their features and uses, preparing students to understand descriptions in an information exchange.

3. Exchange and Interpret Information: Students ask a partner about furniture purchases and prices to complete a table. They then use the information together to complete sentences identifying the items. This gives questions and descriptions a purpose: working out what each person bought.

Common Mistakes with Houses, Rooms and Furniture Vocabulary

Making furniture plural: 'Furniture' is uncountable. Use 'some furniture' for a general quantity or 'pieces of furniture' when counting items. Incorrect: 'We bought three furnitures.' Correct: 'We bought three pieces of furniture.'

Using in for an object resting on a surface: Use 'on' when something rests on a table or shelf; 'in' describes being inside something. Incorrect for this meaning: 'The vase is in the table.' Correct: 'The vase is on the table.'
