Students take it in turns to call out coordinates from their partner's grid on the worksheet. If their partner has a letter in that square, they say 'hit' and tell the student the letter. The student then writes the letter in the grid and has another turn. If their partner doesn't have a letter in that square, they say 'miss'. The student then draws an X in the grid and play passes to their partner. The first student to find all seven family words wins the game.

Give each student a bingo card. Begin the game by reading out a family or relationship word from the caller's sheet and putting a tick beside it. If a student has a matching word on their bingo card, they say the word aloud and cross it off. When a student has crossed off all nine words, they shout 'Bingo!' and read out the nine family and relationship words on their card. If the words are correct, the student wins the round. If the student has made a mistake, the game continues. In round 2, use the same procedure but read out the definitions instead of the words. If a student has a matching word, they cross it off their card. Play several rounds, making sure students receive a different bingo card each time. If you have more than 12 students in the class, students play the game in groups of four or five. This resource can also be used with our 'Family Flashcards and Worksheet' and 'Family Riddles' game.

The other students listen and look at the family and relationship words on their bingo cards to see if they have a word that matches the definition. If they do, they cross it off. The game continues until a student has crossed off four words in a row. When this happens, the student shouts 'Bingo!' and then reads out the family and relationship words they crossed off. If the words match the definitions that were read out, the student wins the round. Students then continue to see who can cross off all 16 words. Groups play several rounds, with students taking turns to be the bingo caller and with players using a different bingo card each time.

Explain connections between people: Identify whose relative you mean when describing a family tree or story. 'Leila is Amir's aunt' is clearer than 'Leila is the aunt' when several families are involved.

Discuss relationships and experiences: Move beyond naming relatives by describing contact or shared activities, as in 'I get on well with my sister, and we cook together.' Students can discuss a fictional family or people they know instead of sharing personal details.

3-Step Framework for Teaching Family and Relationships Vocabulary

This sequence suits elementary to pre-intermediate classes. The more advanced phrasal verb and idiom resources can support separate lessons.

1. Recognise Relationships from Definitions: Use bingo cards containing family and relationship words. Students listen to definitions and cross off matching words, checking meaning before they need to explain relationships themselves.

2. Build and Explain Sentences: Move to dominoes where students complete sentences with relationship words and read the results aloud. Follow with the describing game, giving classmates 30 seconds to guess a word from a description. This shifts students from recognising definitions to producing their own clues.

3. Exchange Information about a Family: Students complete sentences about a family tree, then ask a partner questions to fill the gaps in their own tree. They explain relationships using the prepared sentences and add names in the correct places, applying the vocabulary to a shared information task.

Mistakes to Avoid with Family and Relationships Vocabulary

Using the wrong preposition after married: Use 'married to' when naming someone's spouse. 'Married with children' describes a different situation and does not identify the spouse. Incorrect: 'She is married with an engineer.' Correct: 'She is married to an engineer.'

Confusing the direction of a relationship: Work out the relationship from the speaker's position. Your sister's daughter is your niece; you are her aunt or uncle. Incorrect: 'My sister's daughter is my aunt.' Correct: 'My sister's daughter is my niece.'
