EAP Cohesion and Coherence Worksheet - Reading, Vocabulary and Writing Exercises: Binary Choice, Identifying, Gap-fill, Sentence Rewriting, Paragraph Rewriting, Peer Feedback - Speaking Activity: Guided Discussion, Freer Practice - Pair Work In this cohesion and coherence worksheet, students practice identifying unclear reference words and rewriting sentences and paragraphs to improve clarity in academic writing. Students begin by choosing the clearest option for each follow-up sentence, discussing their reasoning with a partner. Students then read a text about reference clarity and discuss the questions with their partner. Next, students read each sentence and underline the reference word, discussing what the reference could refer to. After that, students complete sentences with nouns from a box. Students then rewrite the second sentence in each sentence pair, making the reference clearer. Following that, students read a paragraph and underline four examples of unclear reference words. Next, students rewrite the paragraph, replacing each unclear reference with a clearer alternative. Finally, students swap worksheets with their partner, complete a checklist about their partner’s paragraph and use it to give feedback.
