ESL Singular and Plural Nouns Board Game - Vocabulary: Changing Word Forms, Spelling - Group Work Here is an engaging singular and plural nouns board game to help students practice or revise the two noun forms and their spelling. The game cards are numbered from 1 to 6 and are used instead of a dice. The cards also vary in difficulty, number 1 cards are quite easy and number 6 cards are fairly difficult. Students move forward in the game according to the number on the card by giving the plural form of the singular noun on the card and spelling it correctly. The game begins with player 2 picking up a card and reading the singular noun on the card to Player 1. Player 1 then tries to give the plural form of the noun and spell it. If Player 1 gives the correct plural form and spelling, the student moves the number of squares indicated on the card. If Player 1 gives the wrong plural form or spells the plural noun incorrectly, the student stays on the same square. Player 3 then picks up a game card from the top of the pile for Player 2 and so on. The first player to reach the finish wins the game.

Understanding Singular and Plural Nouns

Singular and plural nouns are the two number forms every countable noun takes in English. The singular form refers to one of something, and the plural form refers to two or more. Most plural nouns are formed by adding -s to the base form, but English also has several common patterns that change the ending depending on the final letters of the word, and a group of irregular nouns that change their internal vowels or take an entirely different form altogether.

Writing 'childs' instead of 'children,' or 'mouses' instead of 'mice,' signals to a reader that the writer has not yet consolidated these forms, and the error becomes more noticeable as students move toward higher proficiency levels where writing accuracy is expected. This page offers eight ESL resources for practicing singular and plural nouns across A1-A2, A2, and B2 levels, with one free download available.

The table below shows the main spelling rules for forming plural nouns in English.

RuleApplies ToSingularPlural
Add -s Most nouns dog dogs
Add -es Nouns ending in -ch, -sh, -x, -s, -z match, brush, box matches, brushes, boxes
Change -y to -ies Nouns ending in consonant + y city, baby cities, babies
Change -f or -fe to -ves Some nouns ending in -f or -fe leaf, knife leaves, knives
Vowel change Common irregular nouns man, woman, tooth, foot, mouse men, women, teeth, feet, mice
Different word form Common irregular nouns child, person, ox children, people, oxen
Same singular and plural form Certain animal and object nouns sheep, deer, fish, aircraft sheep, deer, fish, aircraft
No plural form Uncountable nouns information, advice, furniture (no plural)

When to Use Singular and Plural Nouns

Getting Subject-Verb Agreement Right: Every time a noun changes from singular to plural, the verb in the sentence must also change. 'The child runs to school' becomes 'The children run to school.' Getting the plural noun correct but leaving the verb in the third-person singular form is one of the most common follow-on errors, and it is immediately visible to any reader checking for accuracy.

Nouns That Only Exist in the Plural: Some English nouns have no singular form and always take a plural verb: scissors, trousers, glasses, pliers, and tongs are the most common examples. Students often write 'a scissor' or 'one trouser' by analogy with regular countable nouns, but these forms do not exist in standard English. The correct structure when referring to one item is 'a pair of scissors' or 'a pair of trousers.'

Nouns That End in -s but Take a Singular Verb: Words such as 'news,' 'mathematics,' 'economics,' and 'linguistics' end in -s and look plural, but they refer to a single subject area and require a singular verb: 'The news is on at six' and 'Mathematics is her strongest subject.' Students who apply the plural-verb rule by appearance rather than by meaning will produce errors that sound immediately wrong to a proficient speaker.

3-Step Framework for Teaching Singular and Plural Nouns

1. Build the Rule Map First: Before students can produce plural forms accurately, they need a clear internal map of the spelling rules. Start with a structured written task where students write the plural form of a set of nouns arranged in four categories: nouns that add -s, nouns that add -es, nouns where the final -y changes to -ies, and nouns with irregular plural forms. Once students have completed the first set, they sort a second set of nouns into the correct category and write the plural form again. Students then choose the correct noun form in a set of sentences and finish by correcting errors in sentences and rewriting them. This progression from categorization to error correction forces students to identify the applicable rule before committing the form to paper.

2. Match the Ending, Make a Sentence: Once students can categorize and apply spelling rules, move them into a game format where the stakes are low but production is required. In groups, students take turns turning over two cards. When a student matches a singular noun card with the correct plural ending or form card, the student scores a point and earns an extra point by making a sentence with the plural noun. If the cards do not match, the student turns them back over. Reviewing the correct plural endings and their pronunciation with the whole class at the end of the game consolidates any forms that caused hesitation.

3. Spell It or Stay Put: For students who need a stronger challenge, use a board game where difficulty is built directly into the mechanics. Cards numbered one to six replace the dice, with lower-numbered cards covering easier forms and higher-numbered cards covering the trickiest. A peer reads the singular noun on the card, and the active player must give the plural form and spell it correctly to move forward the corresponding number of squares. Giving the right form but misspelling it means the player stays where they are, so accuracy at the level of the individual letter is the only route to winning.

Common Mistakes with Singular and Plural Nouns

Applying a Regular Rule to an Irregular Noun: Students often add -s or -es to nouns that have their own irregular plural forms, producing errors like 'tooths' or 'foots' instead of the correct irregular form. Wrong: 'She has two tooths.' Correct: 'She has two teeth.'

Adding a Plural Ending to an Uncountable Noun: Students often add -s to uncountable nouns like 'information,' 'advice,' and 'furniture,' treating them as countable when they have no plural form. Wrong: 'Can you give me some informations?' Correct: 'Can you give me some information?'
